That last line is the real answer to the question most visitors arrive with. A 7.5Ah pack is the one Ryobi itself hedges on. I could not retrieve the compatibility list that the 7.5Ah page refers to, so I will not guess which tool bodies are on or off it. An older version of this page said the 6.0Ah battery uses a redesigned “tall” case that may not seat in older tools. I could not find that claim anywhere in Ryobi’s published material, and Ryobi’s 6Ah page says the opposite, so it has been removed. Only the 7.5Ah carries a written caveat from the manufacturer.

Which Ryobi 40V Battery Size Makes Sense?

Because every standard pack shares the same 40V system, capacity is the practical choice, and Ryobi publishes a few numbers that help. Its 7.5Ah page claims four times the runtime of the 40V 2.0Ah compact battery and lists an on-board fuel gauge that displays remaining runtime. Its dual-platform charger page lists a 6Ah pack at about one hour on that charger. Those are manufacturer figures, not tests of ours, and real runtime depends on the tool, the cutting or blowing load, and the temperature.

• 2.0Ah to 2.6Ah: the lightest packs, suited to a trimmer or hedge trimmer used in short bursts.
• 4.0Ah to 6.0Ah: the middle of the range, and the safest buys given Ryobi’s “works with any 40V tool” wording for the 6Ah.
• 7.5Ah and up: the longest runtime, but the 7.5Ah is the pack carrying Ryobi’s select-tools note, so confirm your tool first.

The size guidance above is my own reasoning from capacity, not a Ryobi recommendation. The simplest way to avoid a wasted purchase is to buy the capacity your heaviest tool needs, and to check a 7.5Ah or larger pack against Ryobi’s compatibility information first.

Are Ryobi 40V and 40V HP Batteries Interchangeable?

What I did not find is a Ryobi statement quantifying how a standard pack performs in a high-power HP tool, so any claim that it “runs slower” is unconfirmed. Why 18V ONE+ and 40V Batteries Do Not Swap

A common mix-up is treating all green Ryobi packs as one family. Ryobi runs two separate cordless systems: 18V ONE+ for drills, saws, and workshop tools, and 40V for outdoor equipment such as mowers, blowers, trimmers, and chainsaws. Third-Party Batteries and Adapters: The Safety Question

Searching Amazon for a 40V Ryobi battery returns many packs titled as replacements for Ryobi OP4040, OP4060A, or OP4075A models, at prices well under Ryobi’s own. They are not Ryobi products, and none of Ryobi’s compatibility statements cover them. Ryobi does not write about those packs by name, but its charger manual is clear about the principle.

• The Ryobi OP403 charger manual warns: “Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by the battery charger manufacturer may result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons.”
• It also says not to modify the product or create accessories or attachments not recommended for it, and calls any such alteration misuse that could lead to a hazardous condition.
• For compatible battery packs, the manual sends you to Ryobi’s tool, appliance, battery pack, and charger correlation supplement (988000-842) rather than to a general rule.

Read plainly, a cross-brand adapter or an unbranded replacement pack falls outside what Ryobi recommends or sells. My reading is that this puts the risk on you, since Ryobi’s own manual attaches the fire warning to exactly that category. A lithium-ion pack that fails does so as heat, so if you do buy a non-Ryobi pack, charge it on a hard surface away from anything flammable, never leave it charging unattended, and stop using any pack that swells, smells, or runs hot.
