The most common buying mistake is not mixing brands. It is mixing two platforms from the same brand. A battery that says M12, 40V or V60 will not necessarily fit the tools you already own.

Which Batteries Really Are Interchangeable Across Brands?

The usual advice is that no brand supports cross-brand batteries. That is true for the big consumer names, but it misses the official alliances, where several makers deliberately share one battery. These are the ones we could confirm from the makers’ own pages.

Two cautions. First, when these alliances launched, ToolGuyd reported the Bosch ones as Europe-only, so do not expect to find these brands on a US shelf. Second, Einhell’s platform partners are mostly niche industrial and hygiene brands, not the big power tool names. DeWalt Battery Compatibility Chart

DeWalt’s 20V MAX is its main platform. DeWalt describes the FLEXVOLT as a pack that automatically switches voltage when you change tools, so one battery covers 20V MAX tools, 60V MAX tools and, with two packs, 120V MAX systems.

Makita Battery Compatibility Chart

Makita’s 18V LXT is described as the largest 18V slide-battery platform, with over 350 compatible products. Every LXT pack, from the 2.0Ah BL1820B to the 6.0Ah BL1860B, fits every LXT tool.

Craftsman V20 batteries work with Craftsman V20 tools. The V60 line is a separate outdoor-equipment platform: V60 batteries will not run V20 tools, and the reverse is also true.

Bosch 18V Compatibility

Bosch runs more than one 18V line. The Home and Garden 18V line is the one opened up to partners in the Power for All Alliance, and Bosch also has a Professional 18V line. Check the colour and platform name before buying a pack. The 18V Professional system in Europe has its own partners, including Klauke, Brennenstuhl and Wagner.

Einhell 18V Power X-Change Compatibility

Einhell’s Power X-Change system is shared with Ozito, and Einhell lists ten platform partners on its own site, such as Blickle and Heissner. Einhell batteries are not made to fit DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee or Ryobi tools. So the honest answer to “do Einhell batteries fit other brands” is: only the brands inside the Power X-Change platform.

Worx PowerShare Compatibility

Worx PowerShare is unusual: the same 20V battery runs Worx 20V tools, and two packs stacked together power the 40V tools. Worx says PowerShare batteries are compatible with all Worx 20V, 40V and 80V tools.

Greenworks Battery Compatibility

How to Check If a Battery Fits Before You Buy

• Read the platform name, not just the voltage. M18, LXT, ONE+, V20 and 20V MAX are platform names. A bare “20V” or “18V” tells you little.
• Match the platform on both the battery and the tool. Check the tool listing for the exact system name, especially for bare-tool purchases.
• Look at the connector. If the battery does not click in with no force, stop. Do not file or modify a connector to make it fit.
• Check the charger too. A pack needs a charger from the same platform; see how to charge a drill battery with a different charger.
• Ask which tools you will add later. A platform with the tool you want in two years is worth more than a cheaper battery today.

Can You Use Third-Party Batteries?

Third-party packs and adapters are not made or backed by the tool maker, so a maker warranty may not cover problems tied to them. We have not tested any, so we do not rate them.
