Stain

Stain adds color and depth to wood, but results depend on prep, product, and sealing. This section gathers color charts, application and sealing tips, and stain-removal fixes.

Color charts: Sherwin-Williams, Minwax, and Behr.

Prep, seal & sheen: sanding for stain, sealing after staining, and matte vs satin.

Removing stains: dark stain, white stains, and water stains on a table.

Conditions: staining temperature.

For the complete finishing workflow, see our wood finishing guide.

Do you need to seal wood after staining? Yes — a clear topcoat (poly, lacquer, or wax) protects the color and the wood from wear and moisture.

How cold is too cold to stain? Most stains need roughly 50–90°F; below that they won’t dry or absorb properly.
