Wood Maintenance
Wood lasts far longer when it is sealed, cleaned, and repaired the right way. This section gathers our guides for protecting, restoring, and maintaining wood — indoors and out — so furniture, posts, and trim keep their strength and finish for years.
Repair & rot: fix water-damaged wood, repair a rotting post without replacing it, mend split wood, and remove water rings.
Sealing & waterproofing: waterproof wood, seal pine, and apply spar urethane.
Surface care: remove furniture scratches, whether acetone damages wood, and dewaxed shellac basics.
Prevention: stop 4×4 posts warping, separate concrete and wood, and use Kilz outdoors.

How do you protect wood from water damage? Seal it with a suitable finish (spar urethane, exterior sealer, or paint), keep end-grain and joints covered, and lift wood off damp concrete so moisture can’t wick in.
Can rotted wood be repaired without replacing it? Minor rot can be dug out and rebuilt with a wood hardener plus epoxy filler; only structurally failed sections need full replacement.
